Academic Support Center
ASC Goals

Informed by the mission of The Chicago School and the Center for Academic Excellence, the goals of the Academic Support Center are to

    • promote intellectual curiosity and learning efficiency
    • assist students in acquiring particular skills necessary for successful practice in the field of psychology
    • address students’ individual needs of academic support
ASC Services

The Academic Support Center, located in Room 1009, provides the following services:

    • Individual writing consultations and tutorials, designed for students interested in improving the quality of their writing. We ask the students to email us papers that are representative of their writing skills as well as to explain the nature of the assignment and what kind of help they expect. Upon reviewing each student’s work, we schedule a 30-minute writing consultation. If desired by the student, multiple-session writing tutorials can be arranged. Full-time students are expected to come for face-to-face consultations; part-time or on-line students can arrange for telephone conferences with our tutors. Important note: We do not edit or “fix” papers; we use them as material for tutoring professional writing.
    • Workshops and in-class presentations on critical thinking, research, APA style, proofreading, oral and poster presentations, internship applications, time management and study skills
    • Reviewing of practicum, internship or job applications and mock-interviews conducted by peers
    • Resources and language consultations for international students. We design tutorials and provide information and guidance to help international students adjust to the new linguistic and cultural environment.
    • Professional copyediting. We have identified professional copyeditors who can be hired by the students to help them with the final version of their dissertation proposals or dissertations. Some of these editors specialize in helping writers with learning disabilities.
    • Open house every semester, devoted to particular topics such as APA style or strategies for composing the first draft of a paper in the field of psychology
    • A library with books on writing, APA style, critical thinking and reading, study skills, learning disabilities, and careers in psychology
    • And much more to be found on our ANGEL community group webpage, accessible to all Chicago School students
